Method
Circulating tumour necrosis factor alpha protein concentration in serum or plasma by immunoassay. Timing relative to any exercise bout, meal or challenge is recorded on the edge, since this analyte moves within hours.
The method is part of the endpoint identity. Studies measuring the same quantity by a different method are held as separate endpoints.
Notes
ABBREVIATIONS ADDED 2026-08-23, and the reason is a tokenising asymmetry rather than a missing word. The span scorer de-hyphenates the ID before tokenising — `tnf-alpha` becomes {tnf, alpha} — but it does NOT de-hyphenate the SPAN, so a paper writing "TNF-α" yields the single token "tnf-α", which matches nothing. Measured: the bare span "TNF" resolves to this node correctly, while "TNF-α" and "TNF-alpha" both fail. Every one of those forms is the same analyte and the hyphenated ones are what papers actually print. Same family as the DAS28/DAS-28 fix in iteration 48. Safe to list here because this analyte is unambiguous in the vocabulary — there is exactly one TNF node. Contrast SBP and DBP, refused in the same batch and deliberately NOT added: three systolic nodes exist (office, setting-unspecified, 24-hour ambulatory) and the abbreviation cannot say which, so a bare "SBP" span SHOULD refuse rather than silently pick one. Three things share this analyte's name and only one belongs here. TNF-alpha mRNA transcript abundance by RT-PCR is a gene-expression count in arbitrary or fold units; stimulated intracellular or supernatant TNF-alpha from an ex-vivo whole-blood or monocyte challenge is a capacity-to-respond measure, in the same family as the stimulated interleukin-10 and interleukin-12 endpoints in this vocabulary; this node is a resting circulating concentration in pg/mL. They dissociate routinely and none is convertible to another. Also near CAT:outcome/interleukin-6 and CAT:outcome/c-reactive-protein — same panel, same direction, different analytes with very different half-lives and assay dynamic ranges.
