Compound
calciol
Vitamin D3. ChEBI labels it calciol; cholecalciferol and vitamin D3 are synonyms, which is why an exact-label search missed it. Pinned by a reviewer after checking the record. FOUR BOUNDARIES. (1) THE OTHER D SPECIES ARE NOT THIS NODE. Ergocalciferol (D2) differs in potency and half-life. The hydroxylated forms given as drugs are further removed still: calcifediol (25-hydroxy-D3), calcitriol (1,25-dihydroxy-D3), alfacalcidol and paricalcitol bypass one or both activation steps and are prescribed for renal and parathyroid disease rather than taken as a supplement. A trial dosing any of them is subject_species_mismatch, named in dosed_subject. Where a paper says only "vitamin D" and never states the form, that is UNSTATED, not mismatched — extract it and record the wording in dose_regimen. (2) SERUM 25-HYDROXYVITAMIN D CAN BE A LEGITIMATE OUTCOME HERE, AND THAT MAKES THIS SUBJECT DIFFERENT. CAT:outcome/serum-25-hydroxyvitamin-d exists, so a trial that GIVES D3 and measures the rise in 25(OH)D produces a real edge — it is the compound moving its own metabolite, which is a pharmacokinetic finding the graph can hold. What does NOT belong is the far larger literature where 25(OH)D is the READOUT of something else: season, latitude, adiposity, a disease, a diet. There the exposure is not this compound and the claim runs backwards through the graph, which is subject_is_the_outcome. The test is what was ADMINISTERED, never what was measured. (3) VITAMIN D WITH CALCIUM IS A COMBINATION WHEN THE CALCIUM IS ONLY IN THE TREATMENT ARM. Co-administration is routine in fracture and bone-density trials. If both arms receive the same calcium and only the D3 differs, the calcium is balanced background and the contrast isolates D3 — extract it and record the background in population. If the treatment arm gets D3 plus calcium against a comparator with neither, the estimate belongs to neither alone: decline combination_exposure and name the split in co_exposure. (4) DOSE FORM AND SCHEDULE ARE RECORDED, NOT EXCLUDED. Daily, weekly, monthly and single-bolus regimens all belong to this node, and so do oral drops, capsules and intramuscular injection — but they are not interchangeable, and large intermittent boluses have been reported to behave differently from equivalent daily doses. Write the amount, the interval and the route as the paper states them. Recording the schedule is what lets that question be asked of the graph rather than hidden inside it.

- Population
- Pregnant women over 18 years with a singleton pregnancy and screening 25(OH)D between 25 and 100 nmol/L, recruited at 11-14 weeks' gestation at three UK hospitals; 27.5% of the placebo group and 29.1% of the cholecalciferol group also used additional vitamin D supplements of up to 400 IU/day, and all received standard antenatal care.

What it touches on the way
A finding says calciol moved an endpoint. This is the biology in between: the proteins and reactions it runs through to get there. It is where to look for the two things a list of findings cannot answer — why a result might happen, and what else acts on the same machinery.
2 of these are proteins with a page of their own, and that is the door: a protein page says what else it carries, which is how one compound leads to the next.
