Endpoint
Total sleep time
CAT:outcome/total-sleep-timereported in minutes
Method
Total time scored as sleep across a recording period, by polysomnography, actigraphy or sleep diary, with the instrument recorded on the edge.
The method is part of the endpoint identity. Studies measuring the same quantity by a different method are held as separate endpoints.
Notes
Distinct from time in bed and from sleep efficiency, which is this quantity divided by time in bed. A supplement that shortens the time taken to fall asleep without lengthening the night moves sleep-onset-latency and leaves this unchanged, which is a common and real pattern rather than an inconsistency.

melatonin — no detected effect on
LikelyGrade B, Likely. Human evidence, limited replication or design limits.FindingNull resultreplicated ×2“The median in-hospital sleep duration was 6.0 hours (IQR: 5.0–6.2), with slightly longer duration in the melatonin group (6.0 (5.3–6.3) vs 5.8 (5.0–6.0), p=0.136), though this difference was not statistically significant.”
