Endpoint
Serum albumin
CAT:outcome/serum-albuminreported in g/dL
Method
Serum albumin concentration by clinical colorimetric dye-binding assay. The dye is recorded on the edge, because bromocresol green reads systematically higher than bromocresol purple at low albumin concentrations, which is precisely the range these nutritional trials operate in.
The method is part of the endpoint identity. Studies measuring the same quantity by a different method are held as separate endpoints.
Notes
SIGN INVERSION against urinary albumin excretion rate, urinary microalbumin and 24-hour urinary protein excretion. All measure albumin or the protein it dominates, but serum albumin indexes synthetic and nutritional status and improves by RISING, while every urinary albumin measure indexes glomerular leak and improves by FALLING. SIGN INVERSION also against alanine and aspartate aminotransferase: all three sit on one liver panel, but albumin is a synthetic-function marker improving by RISING while the transaminases are hepatocyte-injury markers improving by FALLING. A single 'liver function' node reverses one side of it. Note also that this falls in acute inflammation independently of nutrition, so C-reactive protein movement on the same edge is a confounding flag.

all-cis-5,8,11,14,17-icosapentaenoic acid — increases
Well establishedGrade A, Well established. Replicated human trial evidence, consistent direction.Finding“Serum albumin was significantly higher in the EPA-rich fish oil group than the controls (p = 0.03), however this difference was not clinically significant.”
Quoted verbatim from Eicosapentaenoic acid decreases inflammation and improves glucose homeostasis in patients with burns: a randomized clinical trial.. - Study
- RCT
- Participants
- 24
- Duration
- 3 weeks
- Dose
- 1.5 g/day EPA as EPA-rich fish oil capsules (500 mg EPA per capsule, three times daily with meals)
- Population
- Hospitalised adults aged 18-65 with non-severe burns covering less than 20% of total body surface area, able to take more than 90% of their daily calorie requirement by mouth, without diabetes, organ failure, cancer or immune disorder; both the EPA arm and the control arm also received 600 mg/day DHA.
