ModerateEvidence strength: moderate. Human evidence with one recorded weakness, or capped at moderate by its design or by unread numbers.Findingreplicated ×1“Pooled analysis showed that calcium supplementation during pregnancy was associated with a significant reduction of 45% in risk of gestational hypertension [Relative risk (RR) 0.55; 95 % confidence interval (CI) 0.36-0.85] and 59% in the risk of pre-eclampsia [RR 0.41; 95 % CI 0.24-0.69] in developing countries.”

Very limitedEvidence strength: very limited. Human evidence with major recorded weaknesses, or non-human, uncontrolled or unverified evidence.Findingreplicated ×1“There was also a reduction in the risk of pre-eclampsia associated with calcium supplementation (13 trials, 15,730 women: average RR 0.45, 95% CI 0.31 to 0.65; I² = 70%; low-quality evidence).”

How it is measured
Proportion of pregnant women with a new diagnosis of pre-eclampsia, defined as new-onset hypertension after 20 weeks of gestation together with proteinuria or other maternal organ dysfunction, by a stated clinical diagnostic criteria set. The criteria set is recorded with each finding, and so is whether eclampsia was counted together with pre-eclampsia as a single event.
