Method
Haemoglobin concentration in whole blood by automated haematology analyser. Sample site and posture recorded on the edge — capillary samples read higher than venous, and supine sampling reads lower than seated through plasma volume shift.
The method is part of the endpoint identity. Studies measuring the same quantity by a different method are held as separate endpoints.
Notes
Confused by name alone with glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), which is a glycaemic control measure in percent or mmol/mol that improves by FALLING and shares nothing with this endpoint but a word — a SIGN INVERSION across two unrelated constructs, and the most likely one to arise from string matching. Also confused with the incidence of anaemia as a dichotomous event: a mean rise of a few grams per litre need not move the proportion of patients below a diagnostic threshold, so a positive continuous effect and a null dichotomous effect are consistent. Haematocrit is a separate node measuring packed cell volume and moves with plasma volume.
