Method
Packed red cell volume as a fraction of whole blood, by automated haematology analyser (calculated from red cell count and mean corpuscular volume) or by microhaematocrit centrifugation. The method is recorded on the edge; centrifuged values run 1 to 3 percent higher because of trapped plasma.
The method is part of the endpoint identity. Studies measuring the same quantity by a different method are held as separate endpoints.
Notes
Direction is population-bound and is set here for the polycythaemia and hyperviscosity context these papers address; IN ANAEMIA THE SAME NUMBER IMPROVES BY RISING, so an edge without the population recorded has an indeterminate sign. Its near-miss is whole blood viscosity, of which this is the dominant determinant - they move together, so reporting both from one study as independent evidence double-counts a single observation. Tightly coupled as well to blood haemoglobin concentration from the same complete blood count, which is a mass concentration in g/dL and not interchangeable; plasma volume shifts move both with no change in red cell mass.
