Method

Global cognitive screening score on the Mini-Mental State Examination, 0 to 30, administered by a trained assessor. Where a study reports a modified or telephone version, that is recorded on the edge, since the ceiling and the item set differ.

The method is part of the endpoint identity. Studies measuring the same quantity by a different method are held as separate endpoints.

Notes

21 papers, 11 randomised and 9 pooled. RISING is better, which inverts against most symptom scales. A screening instrument with a well-known ceiling effect in healthy older adults: a null in a cognitively intact population is weak evidence of no effect and the population belongs on the edge. Distinct from the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, which is scored on the same 0-30 range and is NOT interchangeable — it is harder, and a study reporting both will show different values for one person.
