Definition
Syringomyelia is characterized by cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-filled cavities (syrinx) inside the spinal cord, either as a result of a known cause (secondary syringomyelia, SS) or, more rarely, due to an unknown cause (primary syringomyelia, PS).
