Prostate volume

Method

Total prostate volume by transrectal ultrasound using the prolate ellipsoid formula. Whether the reported value is the volume at endpoint or a mean change from baseline is recorded on the edge.

The method is part of the endpoint identity. Studies measuring the same quantity by a different method are held as separate endpoints.

Notes

Post-void residual volume shares the unit and often the same imaging session but measures a different structure entirely — bladder content, not gland size — and an extractor reading 'volume' alone cannot tell them apart. Note also that PMID 19370565 reports prostate size at endpoint and as mean change as two separately pooled estimates (-1.05 cc and -1.2 cc); those are one finding expressed twice, not two edges. Distinct from serum prostate-specific antigen, which correlates with gland volume but is a concentration that also moves with inflammation, instrumentation and cancer independently of size, and from the IPSS total, which dissociates from volume routinely.
