How it is measured
Whole-body energy expenditure after a test meal, calculated from oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production measured by ventilated-hood (canopy) indirect calorimetry over a postprandial window of about 4 hours (240 minutes). The window length, the test meal, and whether the value is total energy expenditure over the window, an incremental value above fasting baseline, or a mean rate per minute are recorded with each finding.
