Method

Total score of the 7-item self-administered lower urinary tract symptom questionnaire, range 0-35, administered as the International Prostate Symptom Score or as the AUA Symptom Index. Which of the two was administered is recorded on the edge.

The method is part of the endpoint identity. Studies measuring the same quantity by a different method are held as separate endpoints.

Notes

The two instruments are pooled here because they are the same seven items on the same range, but the edge must still record which was used: the IPSS appends an eighth quality-of-life item and the AUA index does not, and trials that administered one did not administer the other. That eighth item is a separate node (IPSS quality-of-life item score, 0-6) and is NOT part of this total. The more damaging near-miss is item scale: the AUA nocturia item is a single 0-5 ordinal drawn from this same questionnaire, and pooling a 0-5 sub-item with a 0-35 total misstates effect magnitude by roughly sevenfold. Also distinct from maximum urinary flow rate, an objective urodynamic measure that dissociates from symptom score, and from nocturnal voiding frequency, a count.
