How it is measured
Fraction of an oral dose of stable-isotope-labelled iron (such as 57Fe or 58Fe) absorbed, calculated from the enrichment of the isotope incorporated into circulating erythrocytes about 14 days after dosing, assuming a stated fraction (commonly 80%) of absorbed iron is incorporated into red cells. The isotope, test-meal composition and the circulating blood volume estimate are recorded with each finding.
