Death before hospital discharge (preterm infants)

Method

All-cause death before discharge from hospital in infants born preterm, with the denominator the liveborn cohort at randomisation or enrolment. Gestational-age band and birthweight stratum recorded on the edge.

The method is part of the endpoint identity. Studies measuring the same quantity by a different method are held as separate endpoints.

Notes

Shares the word 'mortality' with the adult all-cause mortality node but has an entirely different competing-risk structure: an infant who dies cannot go on to develop bronchopulmonary dysplasia, so mortality and BPD trade against each other and an intervention that reduces one can inflate the other. That competing risk is the reason the death-or-severe-BPD composite exists; this node is NOT that composite and must never absorb it, because the composite is dominated by BPD events. Also distinct from in-hospital mortality in adult critical care, which shares the phrase and nothing else.
