Carotid intima-media thickness (IMT)

A measurement of the thickness of the carotid artery walls. It is measured by B-mode ultrasonography and is used as a surrogate marker for atherosclerosis.

How it is measured

Distance between the lumen-intima and the media-adventitia interfaces of the far wall of the common carotid artery on B-mode ultrasound, averaged over a stated segment length. Arterial segment and reading protocol recorded with each finding.
