1RM (One-Rep Max)
The maximum weight a person can lift for a single repetition of a given exercise.
Definition
1RM is the standard benchmark for absolute strength. Most people estimate it from a 3-10 rep max using the Epley, Brzycki, or Lombardi formulas rather than testing the actual max — safer and almost as useful for programming. Training percentages reference 1RM: 65-75% for hypertrophy, 80-90% for strength, 90%+ for peaking.
Formula
Epley: 1RM = weight × (1 + reps/30). Brzycki: 1RM = weight / (1.0278 − 0.0278 × reps).
