BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate)
The number of calories your body burns at complete rest, sustaining breathing, circulation, and basic cellular function.
Definition
BMR is the energy required to maintain basic physiological function at rest. It represents the largest single component of daily caloric burn — typically 60-75% of total daily energy expenditure (TDEE). BMR is most accurately measured via indirect calorimetry in a lab; for everyday use, the Mifflin-St Jeor equation is the ADA-recommended estimate.
Formula
Men: BMR = 10W + 6.25H − 5A + 5. Women: BMR = 10W + 6.25H − 5A − 161. W=kg, H=cm, A=years.
