Mifflin-St Jeor Equation
The most accurate everyday formula for estimating basal metabolic rate (BMR), recommended by the ADA.
Definition
Published by Mifflin et al. in 1990, this regression-based equation is roughly 5% more accurate than the older Harris-Benedict equation when validated against indirect calorimetry. Different intercepts for men (+5) and women (−161) account for sex-based body composition differences.
Formula
Men: BMR = 10W + 6.25H − 5A + 5. Women: BMR = 10W + 6.25H − 5A − 161.
